The Transformative Activist Training

Become a Transformative Activist --Come to our Training Jan. 17-20 (Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend) in Berkeley, Ca.

Whether you are a student, raising children, working full-time (and then some), unemployed, retired, or house-bound, YOU can become an activist for social healing and transformation.  If you are already engaged in social activism, we will help you become more effective in your efforts.

Though we are offering this training for a super-low cost for a 3.5 day event, nevertheless if it costs more than you can afford, DO NOT LET THAT BE A FACTOR. We understand that you may have costs to get to Berkeley, Ca.  and to find a place to stay, so we are fine with reducing the fee to whatever you can afford (including ZERO)--all you have to do is say so be sending an email to and telling him what you can afford! But check to see the cost first by going to the registration page To register click here.

There are an overwhelming number of issues on which Republicans and Democrats alike have failed to take action and the progressive left has been ineffective in getting their concerns addressed. So we are building a grassroots rebellion against the Tea Party and those in both major political parties who have capitulated to the logic of serving the 1% at the expense of everyone else.

*The accelerating destruction of the environment?

*Unemployment, poverty (both domestic and global), hunger, homelessness, inadequate wages, the destruction of the middle class?

*The growing selfishness, materialism, and "looking out for number one" consciousness that seems to pervade every aspect of daily life, from our work world to our personal friendships, love and family life?

*Democrats as well as liberal and progressive forces have failed to offer an effective counter-strategy to the Tea Party?

*Reactionary forces have already normalized in political discourse drastic cuts to social services?  And, due to the gerrymandered Congressional districts, that these forces may ride the widespread anger at government into greater power in 2014 and 2016 (even with the backlash against them)?

*The top 1% shape the mainstream policies of both major parties?

*Progressive organizations and movements fail to work together to articulate shared values that could help outsiders understand the fundamental positive vision they are striving for, rather than only hear from the progressives their complaints about what’s wrong with existing policies?

Do You Feel Powerless to Change All This and Yet Desperately Want To?

Well, we can train you to be a Transformative Activist.

We have begun building a movement to fundamentally transform our society and nonviolently challenge global capitalism.

And we need YOU to help us instigate a transformation of consciousness throughout our society that is the absolute prerequisite for making social, economic, and political transformation possible.  Even when progressives win one battle through enormous expenditure of time and money, they often fail to teach their supporters a larger understanding of the world, much less to present a coherent strategy for how to change the larger picture of economic, political and social dysfunction. As a result people end up settling for their particular “win” and feel too exhausted to go on to yet another struggle. We can change that!

We have two ways you can participate in this training:

1.  Register NOW to spend the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday weekend in the beautiful S.F. Bay Area of Northern California Jan. 17-20.   Click here to learn more and to register

2.  And/or register NOW for an online Teleseminar Series to Heal and Transform Our World. The teleseminar will be offered once a week for 12 weeks, and will be available to you so that you can listen at any time should you be unable to listen when it is originally broadcast. Click here to learn more and register

In this training, you will develop skills and become empowered as an effective agent of social transformation and help to build a movement to create a future where the needs of all are more important than the greed of some.

Who are we?  Tikkun Magazine’s Network of Spiritual Progressives (NSP)

The NSP, founded by Rabbi Michael Lerner with co-chairs Cornel West and Benedictine Sister Joan Chittister, is now co-chaired by Lerner and Baptist Pastor J. Alfred Smith, Sr. The NSP is not only for spiritual or religious people, but is for anyone who seeks to replace the globalization of selfishness, materialism, and “looking out for number one” with the globalization of generosity, environmental sanity and genuine caring for all.

Tikkun is a magazine that has been on the cutting edge of social, political and spiritual issues since 1986 putting forth concrete proposals for how to transform our world. Though originally a voice of progressive Jews and the place in which one could hear the voices of those in Israel who critiqued Israeli policy toward Palestinians, Tikkun has evolved to become the voice of all those who believe in a New Bottom Line of love and generosity, including secular humanists, orthodox atheists, and religious progressives from every religious or spiritual tradition.  To learn more about Tikkun, go to:

Rabbi Michael LernerRabbi Michael Lerner is editor of Tikkun magazine, co-chair of the interfaith and Secular-Humanist-welcoming Network of Spiritual Progressives and author of 11 books, including, Spirit MattersThe Politics of MeaningThe Left Hand of God: Taking Back our Country from the Religious Right, and most recently, Embracing Israel/Palestine. The way he has integrated psychology, spirituality and non-violence into his social change activism for decades as Director of the Institute of Labor and Mental Health recently led Congressman Keith Ellison (D. -Minn.), chair of the 80-member Progressive Caucus of the U.S. House of Representatives, to write that “Rabbi Michael Lerner is one of America’s most significant progressive intellectuals and political leaders.”

Cat ZavisCat J. Zavis is a Collaborative Divorce Attorney, Mediator, and Coach for Divorced and Divorcing Parents. In 2009, Cat was awarded a Peace Builders award for her business. She has brought the power of NVC (Nonviolent Communication) to divorced couples and also to their attorneys in an effort to transform how divorce law is practiced and how divorced life is lived and experienced by parents and their children so as to restore, rather than destroy, families.

In this training, you will learn:

·  A concrete vision for how to build a world based on love, kindness and generosity

·  How to move from self-blame to self-love so you can fully engage in the movement with self-empowered commitment

·  Tools to engage with ease and confidence in heated dialogue so all parties can be heard and understood

·  To effectively integrate your righteous indignation and practice forgiveness so you can powerfully challenge power dynamics

·  Why it is important to shift from a liberal political worldview to a spiritually progressive worldview and how to coherently present that view to others

·  How to overcome internal struggles within organizations and movements that undermine their effectiveness

·  Ways to make fundamental changes towards improving big picture issues in a cohesive way.

The spiritual progressive activists we train will know how to articulate a vision that unites people to create a progressive world that speaks to their deepest needs.

     *  Create a movement that can shape  the political life of our country with a spiritually progressive perspective. We will move American politics toward a love and generosity perspective.

     *  Build communities of people who share our New Bottom Line (through the creation of local chapters/groups that will bring these issues and this approach to their communities and politicians, as well as encourage people to run for office in order to take these ideas into the public sphere).

     *  Build a nurturing and supportive social change movement

     *  Learn how to integrate spiritual meaning, psychological wholeness, progressive policies, and skillful communication into the political arena. And help unite all the various movements in a shared worldview, even as they pursue their individual missions

The first training will be January 17-20 (the MLK Jr. holiday weekend) in the San Francisco Bay Area.

On the other hand, we don't have enough money to do our work, and doing this training is costing us more than any income from it, so if you can afford, please do pay!

We CAN reclaim American politics and policies from the Tea Party politicians who are determined to defund and dismantle our government and abandon the poor and the powerless.

The NSP (Network of Spiritual Progressives) promotes the notion that people have spiritual and psychological needs that are often as important as their material needs, and that they hunger for “meaning” and “higher purpose” in life more than merely accumulating material goods. This “politics of meaning” has increasingly been recognized by a growing section of the population, and has been internalized in the consciousness of many.

This training is our next step to make our larger vision of a caring and generous world a reality.

The society we seek to build is one that judges the efficiency, rationality and productivity of our corporations, government policies and every institution or social practice that shapes our lives not only to the extent that they maximize money or power, but also and more importantly to the extent that they maximize love, kindness, generosity, ethical and ecological sensitivity.

In addition, we want these entities to enhance (rather than undermine) our capacity to respond to others as embodiments of the sacred and to transcend a purely utilitarian attitude toward our physical environment so that we can respond to the universe with awe, wonder and radical amazement at the grandeur and mystery of all that is. We call this The New Bottom Line.

Our movement must be as effective in popularizing a spiritual progressive approach as the Right wing has been in pushing a conservative agenda to defund the New Deal safety net for poor and middle-class Americans, destroy the environment, and undermine the rights and protections won by women, gays and minorities.

To achieve this goal, we seek to train you to be an agent of social change with a spiritually progressive consciousness and with the goal of replacing a global system of materialism and selfishness with a global system based on caring for each other and the planet.

This partly involves helping educate people to see the big picture and to feel like it’s appropriate to go for the big picture rather than being stuck in the small struggles. There are a million or more groups involved in particular struggles for equality, material well-being of working people and poor people, environmental sanity, social justice, human rights, peace, civil rights, an end to racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia, etc. Yet they are not able to see themselves as part of a larger movement and can’t articulate a shared perspective that links all these movements together. In general, progressives know what they are against, but they have no clear vision of what they are for except in the limited terms of material entitlements and political rights.

The spiritual progressive activists we train will have a way of articulating a vision that unites people, not only those already involved in liberal or progressive politics, but lots of others who have never really heard a vision from the liberal and progressive world which spoke to their own deepest needs.

We are also working on webinar/teleseminar options for the training. If you'd like to sign up to receive information about those options, please click here.

We are sorry to have to charge and realize that for some people, traveling from far away, the cost of travel may make attending this training in person prohibitive.  If you can organize fifty people in your own community to do this training, at these prices, we will travel to you and provide the training in your area. But you would be better able to attract that many people if you attend this training first.

Although we’ve stated our goals, we are cognizant that we may not be able to achieve all of them in one short training, so there may need to be further trainings or conference calls in the future.

If you know other people who are frustrated with American politics and want to see it change, please recruit them to come to this training. It will be for many a life-changing experience.
