Two-thirds of all the world's polar bears are projected to disappear by 2050 because of global warming. Yet Canada's got a dirty secret -- the country is allowing 600 polar bears to be killed. More than half of these bears are sold in the international wildlife market as skins and rugs.
To keep its gruesome profits flowing, Canada refuses to protect polar bears as "endangered" under the country's Endangered Species Act.
But there is hope for polar bears: This week the Center for Biological Diversity scored a major victory when an international legal body ruled that Canada is violating its own Endangered Species Act by refusing to protect the bears.
Now the clock is ticking, and we have to act swiftly to stop the killing. Canada is already arguing that its polar bear killing is exempt from international law -- and even more bizarrely, that its endangered species act protection process is not an environmental law.
