As the leaves turn and the seasons change, the Global Exchange community continues to build off the momentum of the summer months to work for justice.
Wondering what we did this summer? Read on.
Fracking in California
Following up on the springtime California Fracking tour, we came back to the communities of Fresno, Santa Barbara, and Carpinteria for more organizing.
Our Community Rights Program joined Josh Fox in California to screen his latest documentary GASLAND II to expose the problems we face when gas and oil companies decide the future of our planet. From this, 12 communities in California from Medicine Lake to Culver City have formed campaigns to ban fracking at the local level. Form a support committee in your community.
Stop the Destruction. Start the Healing.
The environmental movement took to the streets this summer to gather in full force against Keystone XL. We marched across the Golden Gate Bridge against the pipeline, walked in solidarity with First Nation communities impacted by tar sands expansion, and joined hundreds more at a Chevron refinery with the common message that oil companies must respect people and the planet.
All summer we pulled out all the stops to halt the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), which is slated to be the largest trade agreement in history that will empower transnational companies to destroy jobs, human rights, and the planet. We took to the streets to inform the public about this secret trade deal, and continue to urge everyone to contact their U.S. Congressperson telling them to oppose the TPP.
Top Ten Corporate Criminals
Our 2013 Top 10 Most Wanted Corporate Criminals list shines a light on some of the world’s worst corporate abusers, gives you information about the abusive behavior of this year’s worst corporations, tells you who is responsible, and how to connect with and support people who are doing something about it.
A Local Collaboration in Ethical Summer Style
The Global Exchange Fair Trade Store in San Francisco partnered with local shop Loft 1513 to provide an alternative (to corporate clothing) for the conscious, fashion savvy shopper. Read more about the collaboration and the people behind the product on our Fair Trade blog.
Taking over Golden Gate Park
We at Global Exchange love any opportunity to spend time in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. Once again, we joined Ben & Jerry's at the annual Outside Lands Music Festival where we scooped ice cream and talked about Fair Trade. Then, for the first time we exhibited a collection of art pieces from our yearly What About Peace? contest at the Peace in the Park Festival. E-mail Kirsten@globalexchange.org if you'd like to bring the exhibit to your community.
Cocktails for a cause
Now, it wasn't all work this summer for the staffers! A few of our summer interns organized a fundraising happy hour for the Global Exchange community to beat the heat of the summer and enjoy some cocktails for a cause. There was a prize drawing, a trivia wheel, a signature cocktail, and lots of opportunities to engage the crowd about the work of Global Exchange.
Summer intern shout out
We cannot conclude our summertime wrap-up without expressing our deepest and sincerest gratitude for our 2013 summer interns. This year's interns had a great deal of energy, passion, and smarts that just blew us all away.
We are so thankful for everything they brought to the office including spearheading the effort to expose the TPP, researching corporate criminals, fundraising, attending every action, tabling at events, supporting campaigners, and so much more. Good luck to all of you!
We invite you to chip in a few dollars to help keep Global Exchange working on these pressing issues.
