Please take just a moment TODAY to help bring an end to child slavery, poverty, and environmental degradation in the cocoa fields.
We need your help to reach our goal of educating and empowering 4,500 youth to speak out on Fair Trade, with the Fair Trade Cocoa Unit and letter writing action to Hershey.
This December, please tell all the educators you know about Global Exchange’s free Fair Trade Cocoa Unit and you will be entered into a prize drawing for $40 in fabulous Fair Trade prizes!* All educators are eligible, from classroom teachers to after school, youth group, and faith-based programs. Many educators plan their second semester curriculum during the holidays, so December is the ideal time to pass this information along.
Are you an educator yourself? Educators who start to teach the unit anytime between now and Valentine’s Day will also be entered into a second $40 Fair Trade prize drawing. Additionally, all participating educators will receive real Fair Trade, organic cocoa beans to use in their classrooms as a teaching aid for free (supplies are very limited, so please sign up TODAY!).*
We are encouraging educators to participate in the National Valentine’s Day of Action because so much chocolate is distributed around Valentine’s Day that it provides a “teachable moment” for youth to understand where chocolate comes from, the environmental and social justice implications of trade, and the importance of Fair Trade.
Last year, during the Third Annual National Valentine’s Day of Action, we educated over 4,000 youth about Fair Trade with help from advocates like you. Let’s see if we can reach 4,500 this year!
This year, we need your help more than ever in contacting educators because we are asking Hershey to stop using cocoa tainted with child and forced labor and start sourcing Fair Trade instead.
We are asking classrooms, congregations, and individuals all over the country to make valentines to send to Hershey. Visit www.globalexchange.org/cocoa for more details.
Start a Sweet Smarts Chapter, too!
Your family, youth group or classroom is invited to join Global Exchange’s national Sweet Smarts network. Participants take simple, creative actions to raise awareness of social justice and environmental issues through Fair Trade. Find out about our detailed Activity Guides and other resources available at www.globalexchange.org/sweetsmarts
Have you already started a chapter? Activity Guide 3 is now online at www.globalexchange.org/activityguides
Please forward this email broadly!
*Please note that, while we encourage educators around the world to participate in the National Valentine’s Day of Action, prizes and cocoa beans are only available to participants with a US address.
