Fair Trade - National
Global Exchange's Fair Trade Campaign is joining our colleagues at International Labor Rights Forum on an Easter/Passover action to call on Hershey to bring justice to the West African cocoa fields. Will you take a moment to take action with us for children's rights?
Kids around the world will be searching around for Easter eggs and afikomen this week. But as many of us are enjoying chocolate Easter egg hunt treasures and prizes for finding the hidden matzo, we have an even bigger hunt for you! Have you ever tried to track where in the world your Reese's Peanut Butter Eggs, Hershey chocolate bunnies, and other chocolates have been? The worldwide trip your chocolate treat has taken might surprise you!
From cocoa fields in West Africa, to processing facilities in Europe to manufacturing plants in Latin America, chances are that your chocolate holiday products have been passed through the hands of many farmers and workers to end up in your basket.
Along the way, your chocolate egg probably rolled into some bitter working conditions such as trafficking, forced labor, child labor and violations of workers' right to organize for their rights. You might have heard that Hershey factories in the U.S. are great to their workers here. Those good jobs are ending as Hershey is outsourcing more and more of its production to Mexico and other countries. Hershey specifically has lagged behind its competitors in agreeing to trace the path its products have taken around the world and ensuring that the workers who produce its products were treated fairly.
This holiday season, let's tell Hershey to end the hunt and give up the goods! This Spring, we don't want to be in the dark any longer!
Please visit salsa.democracyinaction.org/o/703/p/dia/action/public/ to ask Hershey to ensure protection for workers in the cocoa industry!
