Don’t Let the U.S. Trash the Arctic
Why is the U.S. okay with trashing the Arctic? Unbelievably, last month the U.S. delegation to the International Maritime Organization opposed Canada and Russia’s proposal to ban ships from dumping garbage in Arctic waters.
Now is the time to stand up to ensure the highest environmental standards in pristine Arctic waters. Because rapidly melting Arctic ice is opening new shipping lanes, which in the next few years will result in an explosion of ship traffic between Europe and Asia via the Arctic—and the amount of garbage these ships may end up dumping into pristine Arctic waters may increase exponentially.
Help us pressure the U.S. to support zero discharge. Take action now and ask the leader of the U.S. Coast Guard, Admiral Robert J. Papp, to support strong shipping protections for the Arctic.
