Every year, millions of Americans dial 9-1-1 from their cellphones. The largest category of calls come from women in domestic violence situations who think help is on the way. Some of these women will die unnecessarily while operators struggle to find out where the callers are located.
Newly proposed FCC regulations could end this crisis by requiring wireless providers to implement new technologies that provide location information.
But wireless companies are fighting to delay the regulations from taking effect, arguing that the FCC’s timeline is unreasonable and the costs of implementation are too high. In fact, independent assessments have shown that the existing technologies could be implemented in accordance with the FCC regulations and would allow 911 operators to more rapidly locate those in distress.
Urge wireless providers to stop dragging their feet and implement location services.
