December 2013: Spread Love this Holiday Season with Simple Acts for Justice

Dear Friends:

As we enter into this holiday season we are grateful for our community of UU justice makers and all our partners. We want to give special thanks to all who are fasting in Washington, DC, and around the country for compassionate immigration reform. You can support the fasters by signing this petition to Speaker Boehner. #TimeIsNow #Fast4Families. We wish you many blessings this season.

UU Women's Federation intern Hanna Christianson and UUSC's Kara Smith and Shelley Moskowitz with Senator Tom HarkinSupport Workers to Raise the Minimum Wage

Last week UUA and UUSC staff were on Capitol Hill to meet with Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA), sponsor of the Fair Minimum Wage Act, and to visit key senators’ offices to share with them our joint Raising the Minimum Wage—A Moral Imperative statement from UUA and UUSC Presidents Rev. Peter Morales and Rev. William Schulz, signed by over 14,200 people. The Senate is expected to debate the bill in the next few weeks. We are delivering your message: every person has inherent worth and dignity, and raising the minimum wage is vital in ensuring that dignity. The holidays are a particularly challenging time for low wage workers and they need our support.

Please call your Senator today. Call the Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121 and ask for your Senator’s office. All you need to say is:

“Hi, I live in [state] and am calling to ask my senator to support the Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2013 (bill number S. 460) and to speak in favor of the bill during the upcoming Senate debate. I believe raising the minimum wage is the morally right thing to do.”

Lastly, please contact mobilization@uusc.org and let Kara Smith know that you called.

Thirty Days of Love Resources Launched

Join us for the third annual Thirty Days of Love, a period of intentional action, service, education, and reflection. During this time, folks all across the country (and even the world!) have spread love and justice in truly inspiring ways. The campaign will run from Jan.18–Feb. 16, 2014. Start planning for the Thirty Days now! Visit SSL’s website to sign up for Thirty Days of Love and to check out the interactive calendar, suggested worship services themes, and a preview of the resources that will be released in the coming months.

Vote on the Next Congregational Study/Action Issue

Be part of shaping the social witness priorities of the entire denomination! Help your congregation participate in the Congregational Poll—discuss this year’s proposals and determine which five justice topics will contend for the 2014–2018 Congregational Study/Action Issue (CSAI) at General Assembly next June. You can also submit comments on the current Reproductive Justice CSAI. Voting closes February 3, and comments on the current CSAI are due March 1.

Reproductive Justice Ministry with UU Men: A Webinar

What does reproductive justice mean for men? On January 13, 2014 at 3:30pm Eastern, join the Reproductive Justice Advocacy Community for their January webinar: Reproductive Justice Ministry with UU Men! Guest speakers will discuss their personal and professional commitments as male allies in the movement, bringing diverse perspectives around sexual orientation and age. Invite your friends, or join as a small group!

UUA Curriculum on Money Now Available

A new Tapestry of Faith program for adults in UU congregations asks participants to engage in intentional, covenanted, and faithful conversations about money. The curriculum helps participants examine what they have been taught about money; how to approach earning, spending, giving, and investing from a spiritually grounded place; and the role of money in systemic inequality and in the transformed world we can imagine and create. Initiated by the UUA President's Council and produced by the UUA, The Wi$dom Path: Money, Spirit, and Life is now available for free online.

Choose Compassionate Consumption this Holiday Season

UUSC's Choose Compassionate Consumption (CCC) initiative is all about making consumer choices that reflect our values. While there will be tensions between our values and our consumer actions—we cannot expect perfection—together we can make informed decisions about where we channel our money, promoting human rights and social justice through consumer advocacy.

Check out Choose Compassionate Consumption for gift ideas.
