August 2013: 3 Ways to Achieve Immigration Reform and Stop Deportations
As the summer comes to a close, it is crucial that UUs continue to stand on the side of love with immigrant families and connect with their elected officials during the Congressional break, which ends September 6. Here are three ways that you can get involved:
1) In Florida, UUs from a dozen congregations visited their House representatives to urge them to pass compassionate immigration reform and suspend deportations. Learn more about their visits and see how you can organize your own visit during the August recess. Go to www.standingonthesideoflove.org/cir for resources on contacting your representative, organizing an advocacy visit, talking about the legislation, and more!
2) Did you know that more than 30,000 people will be deported this month? Ask your member of Congress to sign on to a letter from their colleagues Reps. Grijalva and Clark calling for a suspension of deportations while the immigration bill is being debated. Click here for more information.
3) Find out of there are Congressional recess events planned in your community by checking the Alliance for Citizenship website. Scroll down the page to find your state and see if there's an event scheduled in your town.
As always, let us know what you are doing and how we can help!
